If you're an Apple iMovie person (and which newbie film-maker isnt?) then you might like to know about the plugins you can get to allow you to do VFT (very funky things)

As someone who uses Final cut for serious stuff, I can't say i've tried them. The eZedia stuff look pretty good though.
